Hurricane Prepareness

Preparing Your RV for a Hurricane

If you’re an RVer in hurricane-prone states like Florida or Texas, careful planning and preparedness are essential. Hurricane season runs from June through November, and taking the right precautions can protect both you and your RV. The best course of action before a storm is to follow evacuation and relocation instructions from your campground and local authorities.

Below are key tips to help you secure your RV and minimize storm damage:

1. Stay Informed

  • Monitor weather updates and hurricane alerts from trusted sources such as the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Tidbits, Windy, and local news channels.

  • Sign up for weather alerts and emergency notifications via your phone or local agencies.

  • Stay in communication with your campground office for evacuation or relocation information.

2. Communicate with Campground Staff

  • Establish contact with campground or RV park staff before hurricane season.

  • They can provide guidance and support during potential evacuations.

3. Have an Evacuation Plan

  • Identify local hurricane evacuation routes and nearby storm shelters.

  • Plan your route in advance, accounting for your RV’s size and any tow vehicles.

4. Review Your RV Insurance

  • Make sure your insurance policy is current and includes hurricane-related coverage.

  • Understand your coverage limits and any storm-specific provisions.

5. Secure Your RV

  • Park in a safe area, preferably a designated hurricane evacuation zone if available.

  • Avoid parking near trees, power lines, or flood-prone areas.

  • Close and lock awnings, slideouts, storage compartments, doors, windows, and roof vents.

  • Use leveling jacks to stabilize your RV.

  • Store or tie down loose outdoor items (chairs, grills, awnings, etc.) to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles.

  • If possible, cover your RV to minimize debris damage.

  • If you must stay in place, move to the highest ground possible.

6. Stock Up on Supplies

  • Prepare a hurricane emergency kit with:

    • Non-perishable food, water, and hygiene supplies

    • Flashlights, batteries, and a multi-tool

    • First-aid supplies and medications

    • Cash, pet supplies, and essential documents

  • Keep a waterproof folder for important paperwork like insurance policies, IDs, prescriptions, and emergency contacts.

  • Fill your RV’s water tanks and extra containers—clean water may be limited post-storm.

7. Fuel and Generator Readiness

  • Keep your fuel tank full, as gas may be scarce during a storm.

  • Test your generator and stock up on extra fuel.

8. Reinforce Windows and Roof

  • If possible, install hurricane shutters or cover windows with plywood.

  • Inspect and repair any leaks or weak spots on your roof before the storm.

9. Stay Connected

  • Fully charge your devices and have backup power sources such as portable or solar chargers.

  • Keep in touch with family and friends to update them on your location and safety.

  • Consider purchasing a NOAA weather radio for updates if cellular service is unavailable.

10. Be Ready to Evacuate

  • Follow official evacuation orders immediately.

  • Secure all loose items inside your RV and take your emergency kit and documents with you.

  • Never drive through standing water—it can stall your engine and cause severe damage.

11. After the Storm

  • Wait for official clearance before returning to your RV.

  • Inspect for damage, document it for insurance claims, and be prepared for limited power or services.

  • For significant damage, take your RV to a specialized repair facility such as The RV Shop for inspection and maintenanc.
